Vanessa Cuthbert RCA FRSA – Contemporary Artist

I work across a range of media with a main focus on painting. I exhibit my work internationally, working with galleries and private collectors.

I obtained a Masters Degree at the Royal College of Art (RCA) in London, graduating with a Distinction and winning the Darwin Scholarship.

I achieved a First Class Honours Degree (BA HONS) at Liverpool School of Art.

I was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts (FRSA) in 2016.

I am also a former Senior Lecturer at Manchester School of Art and Liverpool John Moores University

I work across a wide range of media including painting, printmaking, film, experimental animation, photography and sound. My painting practice is founded on an abstract language: one of colour, shape, texture, line, and tone. These elements are orchestrated into harmonious compositions, communicating on a non-objective level. Positive and negative space interweave as colours and textures are placed on top of each other, or adjacent, in a field of light and space. I exhibit internationally in galleries and film festivals. My film work has also been broadcast on BBC and Channel 4 TV.

Gherdai Hassell is a multidisciplinary visual artist, educator, and public health practitioner and podcast host whose work explores the intersection of art, identity, and well-being. As an Arts in Medicine Fellow, she draws on her background in public health and her international experience facilitating creative programs across communities in the UK, China, and Bermuda, she uses art as a transformative tool for healing and social connection.

Her practice spans painting, collage, and textile-based installations that center Black female identity and memory as sites of reclamation and empowerment. Through her platform Art Affects and her community initiative, The Well, Gherdai leads workshops that integrate creative expression, mindfulness, and self-reflection to promote mental wellness and community.

She has exhibited internationally and facilitated arts and wellness programs for organizations including the Bermuda National Gallery, Venture Arts, and community arts organizations working with refugees and people with disabilities. Gherdai’s work is grounded in a belief that creativity is a public health necessity,  a pathway to collective healing and human flourishing. Her work has been presented in solo and group exhibitions and biennials globally. She is a graduate of Contemporary Art from the China Academy of Art.
