Margaret O’Brien

Margaret O’Brien is a visual artist based between the U.K. and Ireland. Her experimental practice combines analogue and digital processes with emerging technologies to create uncanny, charged environments. O’Brien’s work explores existential concepts such as fragility, precarity, human endeavour and the absurd within everyday encounters of an increasingly technological world.

O’Brien’s work has received significant support from the Arts Council of Ireland, Arts Council England, Arts and Humanities Research Council UK, Irish Research Council, The Slade School of Art, London, and Trinity College Dublin. She has undertaken many international residencies including the Irish Museum of Modern Art; Helsinki International Artist Programme with Temple Bar Gallery, Dublin; Centre Culturel Irlandais, Paris; Leitrim Sculpture Centre; and Fire Station Artists’ Studios, Dublin.

O’Brien’s work is held in public and corporate collections including the Arts Council of Ireland, Allied Irish Bank, GE Aviation and AXA Insurance.

A former Lecturer in Fine Art at National College of Art & Design University, Dublin and at Crawford College of Art & Design University, Cork, O’Brien now works across the UK as an External Examiner and Subject Moderator in Art & Design. She is also Creative Programme and Artist Development Officer with St Helen Council, Merseyside.
