8gate came into being as Rhona Brown and Vicky Carroll established a working space for their art practice in 2018 in another local studio. Collaborating with each other and a number of other groups and spaces, a series of community art projects followed, alongside us each developing our individual work.  

Since relocating to AWOL in 2022, the space has gone on to become Rhona’s base for her own practice and development.  Since then it has hosted individual and small group explorations in pencil, charcoal, paint, linocut and tetrapack etching. Portraiture is a recurring focus. 

“Holding on to what’s behind us can be an obstacle to moving forward or transforming, physically or emotionally. The original concept of 8gate started to be behind us as soon as it was born.  We continue to look ahead to what’s in the process of emerging.” (8gate website)
